This facility is equipped with the following intsruments:

Finnigan LCQ MS:  This is a quadrupole ion trap instrument.  Three ionization sources are available:  electrospray (ESI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and nanospray.  The effective mass range is 2000 Da for singly charged species, but is much higher for multiply charged species.
    Services available:
Mass determination:  simple mass determination of a compound.
MSn:  structural determination of a compound - up to 9 generations of ions can be isolated and subjected to fragmentation.
LC/MS:  currently this is available coupling the HPLC to the ESI source to do MS and MSn of eluting compounds.

Waters 2690 HPLC:  This instrument is equipped with a Waters 996 Photodiode Array Detector and a 5 tray, 24 sample/tray auto-sampler.  This instrument is to be used in tandem with the LCQ.

Bruker Proflex MALDI-TOF MS:  This matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometer can detect compounds between 500 and about 100,000 Da.
    Services available:
Mass determination:  simple mass determination of a compound.
Protein identification:  Peptide fragments of an enzymatically digested protein can be used to ID the protein.

Finnigan GCQ GC-MS:  This is an ion trap instrument.  Two ionization sources are available:  electron impact ionization (EI) and chemical ionization (CI).  It has a mass range up to 1000 Da.  It is equipped with a 90 sample tray auto-sampler.
Services available:
Mass determination:  simple mass determination of a compound.
MS/MS:  structural determination of a compound - ions can be isolated and subjected to fragmentation.
